LTTE is the only body that can give protection to the Tamil people

Eastern University community informs UN Secretary General

The Eastern University community has strongly condemned the statement by the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan that LTTE is taking child soldiers into its fighting force. A letter to this effect has been sent to the UN Secretary General. In this letter the Eastern University community has brought the following matters about NorthEeast to the notice of the UN Secretary General.

It has come to our notice that the UN is attempting to place LTTE in the list of countries and groups that force children into its military forces. Tamil people look upon LTTE as the organization that can protect them from the Sinhala chauvinistic forces and the chauvinistic government and thus pave way for a life of basic freedoms for the Tamil people.

LTTE achieved massive victories for the Tamil people on the military front. It then respected the request of the international community and signed the ceasefire agreement and also proclaimed their readiness for peace negotiations.

They developed good relationship with many local and international bodies and gave them full cooperation on many matters. LTTE has followed the rules of the ceasefire agreement even in the midst of many deliberate actions that are meant to enrage them.

LTTE is the organization that setup children’s homes to care for the children and youth that have been orphaned as a result of the Sri Lankan state terrorism. Many such homes for orphaned children and youth are functioning well in Tamil homeland.

The international community was surprised by the impressive relief work of LTTE during the Tsunami disaster. LTTE is taking care of many children who have been orphaned in this tsunami disaster.

LTTE has also returned many youth who have joined them willingly in the past to their parents through UNICEF and other civil bodies. Even recently 23 youth were returned to their parents in Killinochchi. We can also see that many of the young people, whose names are included in the UNICEF list of underage youth in LTTE, are living normal life. Many who are studying, working, married and are even parents have been included in the UNICEF list of underage youth.

Amidst many threatening challenges, LTTE is, respecting the ceasefire, continuing to be active in the peace front, and doing relief work for the people affected by the tsunami in a well planned manner.

The letter to the UN Secretary General says that in thus present context leveling baseless allegations against LTTE must be condemned outright.
