Drama called “commission of inquiry”
Editorial : Uthayan Daily-13th Dec 2005 Government sources say that President Rajapakse has appointed a two member commission of inquiry to investigate into the recent events in Jaffna that were aimed at disturbing the peace efforts.
This latest commission of inquiry in a long series of commissions of inquiry only goes to show that governments may change in the south but their approach remains the same. Former President Chandrika Kumaratunge also appointed a commission of inquiry to investigate the murders of Batticaloa-Amparai political wing head Kousalyan, LTTE members accompanying him and Mamanithar ChandraNehru. That commission held many sessions expending a lot of resources and time. Nothing useful came out of that or any of the prior inquiries. The benefit of that inquiry was to fool the international community into believing that the government is being responsible in its conduct. The latest commission of inquiry is also a similar drama staged for similar benefits. Any expectation that such inquiries will go to the bottom of causes of these murders will as deceptive as a mirage. Government pretending that it needs a commission of inquiry to find the causes of these murders is also very deceitful. It is crystal clear that these murders are carried out by the paramilitaries with the full backing of the Sri Lankan military intelligence unit to weaken the LTTE that has grown in political and military strength in the Northeast. It is an open secret that a dishonest, shadow war has been let loose in the Northeast to murder LTTE members as well as intellectuals, educationalist and journalists who are supporters of the LTTE. LTTE leader, V Pirabhaharan, in his Maveerar day speech expressed the same view. “This subversive war has been unleashed with the aim of weakening our liberation organisation and to undermine our struggle. …..” “We know the real masterminds behind this shadow war. Though these violent acts were committed under the guidance and direction of the Sri Lankan military intelligence, we are aware that mysterious hands of some racist Sinhala politicians are behind these nefarious activities. This subversive war is being conducted in the government controlled territories, with the backing of the armed forces, utilising Tamil para-military elements as instruments. ….
“A strange low intensity war has been unleashed against us taking advantage of the conditions of peace effected by the ceasefire. Disarming the Tamil para-military groups is an obligation of the state under terms of the Ceasefire Agreement. Having failed to fulfil this crucial obligation the Sri Lanka state has been utilising the Tamil para-militaries as instruments of this subversive war against our liberation organisation. This is a serious war offence.” The commission of inquiry is an attempt to gloss over the war crimes listed by him and to hide the hands behind these crimes.
