Sri Lankan military opens fire on protesters, one killed and 15 injuredA protest gathering of the people, at 8.30 a.m this morning, 09th of May, demanded the removal of the military checkpoint near a school between Kiran and Morakkeddanchenai Batticaloa. The military, angered by the protest started beating the protesters. Eventhough, the protesters continued their demonstration.
SLMM representatives and Member of Parliament Jeyananthamoorthy arrived at the scene and were trying to ease the situation. All of a sudden the military opened fire on the people. Mr Kandasamy aged 65 died on the spot. More 15 protesters including students were injured. Among the injured is journalist Mr Nashar. MP Jeyananthamoorthy was shot at and he escaped by lying flat on the ground. It should be emphasised that the shooting by Sri Lankan military occurred in the presence of SLMM representatives. 09 May 2005
