Trincomalee District Consortium of Tamil People appeals to the government of India

- not to provide military assistance to the Sri Lankan govt. to be used against the fight for Liberation by the Tamils of Eelam

The Tamil people of the combined North and East of Sri Lanka are engaged in a war for the last 50 years to secure their rights and to retrieve their motherland from the extremists in Sri Lanka. The extremists on the Sri Lankan side were engaged in aggression and oppression of the Tamils even prior to the grant of independence by the British. After independence too the successive Sinhala dominated governments are continuing to deprive the Tamils of their lawful rights and to oppress and suppress them in every manner.

The governments of Sri Lanka which did not pay heed to the ahimsa (non-violent) ways in which the Tamils expressed their opposition, had let loose violence and oppression against the Tamils. It was in this context that the agitation for liberation got converted to armed struggle. After 20 years of armed confrontation during which the Tamils suffered immense loss of lives and loss of properties in an unparalleled manner whereby the Sri Lankan govt. and the racist security forces suffered utter defeat and it was this time that the Indian govt. conspired against the Tamils in a direct manner. The Indian govt. in their manipulation for furthering their regional supremacy came down hard to suppress the agitation for freedom by the Tamils.

In the guise of taking the side of Tamils, the Indian govt. entered into the Indo-Sri Lankan accord and attempted to suppress the reasonable fight for freedom of Tamils. This was the main reason for the conflict that arose between the govt. of India and the LTTE at that time. Subsequently, when the LTTE overcame the oppression and devastation carried out by the armed forces of both India and Sri Lanka and when the LTTE was about to take the Jaffna peninsula, the state of India once again conspired successfully against this move. Owing to this, forty thousand Sri Lankan armed forces were given the opportunity to escape.

The Norwegian Govt. facilitated Truce is now four years old. The Tamils have been deceived during the last four years. The Tamils who have been yearning for peace like the proverbial stork which waited for the water in the tank to go dry( so that it can catch the fish) have now been pushed into a situation of war. the Govt. of India has once again begun to show its cruel face at a time when the Sri Lanka Govt. with the assistance of other super powers is getting to ready to wage a war of annihilation against the Tamils. The Govt. of India with a view to firmly establish its regional hegemony and supremacy is including in activities against the freedom struggle of the Tamils. We wish to point out the inherent dangers of this indulgence.

We learn that vast improvements are to be effected to the Palaly(Jaffna) Airport to help the Sri Lankan forces who have forcibly encroached upon thousands of acres of fertile lands belonging to Tamils in Jaffna District. To add to this, the Indian Govt. has undertaken to provide advanced training to the security forces and to supply military equipment and materials to the racist army of the Sri Lankan Govt.

We also learn that the Govt. of India is about to request the European Union to impose a ban on the LTTE in their countries. At this stage we wish to submit that India is a huge country and the Indian army too is a mighty one, but the self confidence and the will power of Tamils are factors that have got to be reckoned.

The Govt. of India will have to realize that it is traitorous to suppress the agitation of an oppressed community. The Govt. of India will have to call off all types of military assistance to the Sri Lankan Govt. almost immediately. Even if the Indian Govt. does not want to help the Tamils in their struggle, let them not take negative steps in this regard. If India persists in continuing to do these which are against the principles of Ghandi the Great Mahatma, we wish to state that one day near India will have to bow down in shame before the international community as wrongful actions bring wrong results.
