Flood aggravates Tsunami disaster crisis in the East
Further displacements due to heavy down- pourCrisis situation caused by the Tsunami disaster in the East is further aggravated by the recent heavy down-pour. Batticaloa, Amparai and some parts of the Trincomalee districts continue to experience heavy rains during the last couple of days and it is feared that several areas may be inundated soon.
New displacements from areas that were not affected by the tidal wave, are placing relief operations in a state of confusion and relief workers in the welfare centres established for Tsunami disaster victims are facing major challenges in finding accommodation for the flood victims. The welfare centers are already overcrowded and lacking in basic amenities. Many of them being ad hoc structures put up in haste, leaking roofs and the fear of inundation are factors causing panic among the inmates.
In some areas, this situation has already necessitated relocating displaced people to areas not flooded.
In the Batticaloa district, residents of Eravur, Pattippalai, Vavunativu, Vellaveli are moving towards safer areas. About 1500 families from Meerakerni, Michchanagar, Sadham Hussein Village, Iyankerni, Ammankudah and First Division, have sought refuge with friends and relatives in other areas. Meanwhile certain thoroughfares in Akkaraippattu and Kalmunai are reported flooded and the Police have warned civilians not to use those roads. Allai-Kantalai road in Trincomalee is also flooded, hampering relief convoys to Mutur and Ichchilampattai.
Heavy downpour has forced the irrigation authorities to open eight sluice gates of the Kantalai tank and it is feared that this may cause a flood situation in Thampalakamam. Irrigation department has announced over the public address system that residents in vulnerable locations should move away to safer places. About 25 such families have already taken refuge in Aathi Koneswara school complex. Updated Figures by the LTTE Peace Secretariat as at 1000hrs 2nd January 2005
