“UNICEF will continue work for the welfare of the children in the NorthEast”

-Ted Chaiban UNICEF Country Head

“UNICEF acted with dedication during post tsunami management of children’s affairs and will continue with the same commitment in implementing the programs meant to upgrade conditions of life for the children in the NorthEast, conscious of the post war situation that prevailed when tsunami struck” said Mr.Ted Chaiban, Country Head of UNICEF in a meeting with Mr.S.P.Tamilselvan, Head of the Political Wing, today 29 May 2005 at the Peace Secretariat in Kilinochchi.

Reviewing the work done by UNICEF after tsunami, Mr.Tamilselvan appreciated UNICEF’s field staff for their ready and willing response to the catastrophic situation and opting to work with TRO and LTTE structures. Reiterating the need to structure the Joint Mechanism for post tsunami management without any further delay, Mr.Ted Chaiban said that UNICEF would continue its advocacy for the Joint Mechanism in the international arena.

In briefing the Country Head on the current political situation Mr.Tamilselvan said that only a resolution of the political problem and restoration of normalcy without military occupation, harassment and coercion can bring about a positive change in the life of the Tamil children. Referring to the provocative situation in Trincomalee, Mr.Tamilselvan said that civilian unrest, if not addressed reasonably, would tend to create a very undesirable situation that may totally disrupt the peace process. He also expressed his appreciation of Mr.Ted Chaiban’s commitment to the cause of the children in the NorthEast during his tenure in the country, wished him well on his new assignment in Sudan and assured fullest co-operation to UNICEF in its future endeavors.

Mr.Ted Chaiban thanked the Political Head for the cooperation extended by LTTE in all matters connected with the welfare of the children and solicited continued co-operation in the process of engagement with the field officials. Associated with the Country Head was Ms.Penny Brune of UNICEF, Kilinochchi. Mr.Thangan, Deputy Head of the Political Division, S.Puleedevan, Secretary General of LTTE Peace Secretariat and INGO Coordinator Mr.Thiagarajah also participated in the meeting.
