LTTE condemns the brutal murders of two sisters

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) condemns the murder of two sisters in Amparai. The women are the sisters of Mr Pohulventhan, who surrendered to the LTTE after killing four members of the paramilitary force, the Karuna Group, which included key member, Iniyabarathy.

The following is a statement released by the Batticaloa Political Wing of the LTTE :

“The LTTE, Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, human rights organizations and other organizations that are working for peace have requested governments that were in power over the past three years to the control the lowly actions of the paramilitary groups that have been violating the ceasefire agreement.”

“We all know that these requests and appeals are ignored by the Sri Lankan government. The immoral activity of Sri Lankan military intelligence and paramilitary groups has pushed the people to the brink of tolerance. We all know that the number of people from paramilitary groups who have surrendered to the LTTE has increased since last year. Those who surrendered killed officials within the paramilitary group because they were unable to tolerate the immoral and unprincipled actions committed by the paramilitary forces.”

“This type of consequence is normal when state terrorism supports unprincipled groups, with the view to destroy the liberation struggle. This is what happened in Amparai on December 7.”

“The two young men killed senior members of the paramilitary force group because they were dissatisfied by the unprincipled acts of their senior members. The paramilitaries fear that the small group of remaining members would revolt against the paramilitary group that has no future. Government intelligence forces, who are looking for excuses to provoke another war, went to the house of one of their defected members, Mr Pohulventhan, and shot dead two of his sleeping sisters, Mrs Yogarasa Yogeswari, 24 and Thurairasa Vathany, 18. The two-year-old baby of Mrs Yogeswari was seriously wounded. The two sisters died on the spot and the baby is in critical condition at the hospital. Another 4-month-old baby of Mrs Yogeswari and a 1-month-old baby of Mrs Vathany are now without their mothers.”

“It is not new to state terrorism to kill innocent civilians when they are unable to face armed fighters. People are outraged that such innocent civilian murders are taking place during supposedly a peaceful time.”

“There is no doubt that the effect of this incident will be to damage normalcy and the already-weakened peace efforts. Organizations that are concerned about the killing of unarmed civilians must take immediate actions to bring out the backgrounds of these murders and ensure that similar murders of unarmed civilians do not take place.”

“Human rights activists and UN human rights organizations must pay attention to this and bring pressure on the government to stop the terrorist activities of the paramilitaries and the government intelligence units. Local women’s groups and local non-government organizations must launch a struggle protesting these cruel murders. Unless people come together to fight against this, there is the danger that any human rights actions will become meaningless.”

“We give our condolences to the two innocent sisters and their families. We also appeal to all representatives of neutral countries functioning in this island express their condolences to the families of the sisters and also put pressure against the state terrorism.”
