
Complete shutdown of Northeast protesting the situation in Trincomalee
A complete shutdown of the Northeast was observed today protesting the government's failure to honour its promise to withdraw the excessive deployment of security forces around the Buddhist statue that was installed illegally.
 During the General shut down in Kilinochchi In all the districts of the Northeast, government offices, schools, commercial outlets and non-governmental offices were closed. All public and private transport services came to a standstill. All the main streets in all the eight districts were empty with no movement of people or vehicles. Three civilians were injured in a grenade attack in the market near the Anuradhapura junction in Trincomalee that was aimed at disrupting the protest.  During the General shut down in Trinco
The main road to Jaffna in the North, the A9 road, was void of any activity. Along this road in many places blockades have been put and tyres have been set alight. Tree trunks and stones were also heaped in many places to block the road. Number of patients in the outpatient clinics in many hospitals was very much reduced. A meeting presided by Mavai Senathiraja was held at 11.00 a.m. on Wednesday in the Sylvister hostel in Trincomalee to discuss the illegally installed Buddha statue. At this meeting the excessive deployment of security forces in the areas of habituation of Tamils was discussed. The inconvenience created to the Tamils by this deployment was pointed out and the need to withdraw this deployment was emphasised. This request was taken to Colombo to the President on Wednesday afternoon. The cabinet promised to the Tamil parliamentarians that they will take action to withdraw the deployment by Wednesday evening. The one day shutdown on Thursday was declared to protest the failure to keep that promise by the cabinet.
