“It is not the armed power or the military power that determines the direction of a war”

-Tamil National Leader-

‘It is not the number of guns or the military power that determines the direction of a war, but detailed strategies and the expert execution of those strategies by the military divisions that determines the outcome of a war’, said National Leader Mr. V. Pirapaharan in a congratulatory message sent to Jeyanthan Brigade celebrating its 12th year on 4th of May 2005.

Extract form his message as follows;

“It is not the number of guns or the size of the army that determines the direction of a war. It is the detailed strategies and the expert execution by the military divisions that determines the outcome of a war. In this regard the Jeyanthan military division has always excelled.

The birth of the Jeyanthan division, twelve years ago, was an important turning point in the history of our struggle. It opened a new path for our freedom struggle. It symbolises the growth and the success of our movement in conventional warfare.

There is an important reason why I created this division. It was the peak of Eelam War II. It was a time when the Sinhala forces had set up many regiments in many regions and had opened up many battlegrounds and were making a concerted effort to occupy our land. Therefore, it was necessary for us to grow as a conventional army to match the growth of the Sinhala forces. We also needed to go beyond guerilla attacks and needed to attack and destroy army camps and to take our struggle to the next level. It is in this background that I created the Jeyanthan military division.

Black Tiger Jeyanthan is an exceptional Maveeran. In addition to perseverance, courage, self-confidence and competence in warfare, he had the dedication to give his life for the ideal of Tamileelam. I named this division in memory of this Black Tiger. Like this Maveeran, the carders and commanders of this division are also competent in warfare. They have exceptional courage. The enemy is fearful of these qualities.

From the beginning, Jeyanthan division has fought continuously without losing intensity. It attacked and destroyed enemy frontlines, security posts and military fences. It wiped out Sinhala military patrols. It did not stop with attacks in open land. It expanded its attacks into dense jungle. From guerilla style attacks to conventional warfare, Jeyanthan brigade performed exceptionally.

Their attacks brought great success to our liberation movement. The enemy forces suffered great loses and the military strength was greatly diminished as a result of their attacks. It was not only the loss of life and injury that left the enemy forces weakened. The number who lost the will to fight and fled the army also increased. The Sinhala forces were desperate to avoid facing the Jeyanthan division. This is a great achievement of the Jeyanthan division.

Jeyanthan division’s conviction and competence was witnessed by the entire world at the beginning of last year. Their courage and dedication to the ideals, at the time when traitorous activities were occurring in Batticoloa, should be commended. They stood alone and attacked at the right time, at the right place and destroyed these traitorous elements and recovered our land, our people and our carders and saved our struggle from great disaster. This proved our competence and showed our convictions to ideals to the world.

Jeyanthan division’s attacks, over the last twelve years, have brought prestige to our movement’s history. The foundation of this prestige is the sacrifices and accomplishments of the carders during battle. With the memories of those who have gone before, along the path they have paved towards freedom, I wish you success. I also send you my blessings for the twelfth anniversary celebration.”
