SriLankan government side rejects recommendations by SLMM to remove armed paramilitaries
A senior military intelligence officer rejected the recommendation by the SLMM and the Presidential Commission of Inquiry to remove Tamil paramilitaries in Northeast working with the Sri Lankan military.
Batticaloa SLMM head, Steen Joergensen, while giving evidence to the Presidential Commission appointed to inquire into the murders of many civilians and LTTE cadres including the Batticalo-Amparai political head Kousalyan, made this recommendation. The Commission in its report also accepted this recommendation. However, the senior intelligence officer said that neither the government not the military will accept the recommendation. The officer also criticized the SLMM head for making the recommendation. The intelligence officer said that the SLMM head is assisting the LTTE’s aim to destroy the military’s intelligence network that uses Tamils. He further said that they are gathering information on LTTE activities through this intelligence network of Tamils. He said that this recommendation and similar actions are aimed at disrupting the military’s intelligence work.
