LTTE Political wing press release after the Kilali incident
Press release
On February 23rd at 4.15pm, LTTE took defensive action
against Sri Lankan security forces who were attempting to
move into LTTE controlled area. Security forces with weapons
and telescopes were moving towards the front line of female
LTTE cadres near Kilali Lake.
Security forces were just 40metres away from our front line and were aiming at our cadres when LTTE took the defensive action. One soldier was killed and another one was wounded as a result. This area has 550 metres of no-mans-land. Therefore, the spying activities of the security force just 40 metres from our front line and their attempt from this position to attack our cadres are clear violations of the CeaseFire Agreement. Our cadres were forced to shoot to defend themselves. The SLMM was informed of the incident and they visited the scene at 6.00pm. After this, LTTE handed over the body ofthe dead soldier to the Sri Lankan military in front of the SLMM at the Muhamalai no-mans-land. It should be noted that on 15.02.2003, at exactly the same location, security forces entered the forested area in ourcontrol and opened fire on our female cadres and wounded many of them. We request the SLMM to take the necessary actions to ensure that incidents like these that are in violation of the rules of CeaseFire Agreement do not take place in the future.
