Navy harassing fishermen at Chulipuram Thiruvadinilai coastal region
Chulipuram Alaimahal fishermen cooperative society has lodged a complaint about Sri Lankan Navy’s increased harassment of the fishermen, with the Human Rights Commission at its Jaffna office.
In recent times the Navy has been refusing to let people go into their own land to collect firewood. It is also applying the pass system to permit fishermen to go to sea more restrictively. As a result there is tension between the Navy and the fishermen in this area. The Navy chief has complained to the police about this. Vaddukoddai police has asked the fishermen society to come to the police station to hold an inquiry. Fishermen of that area have told their society that they will not go to the police station. The complaint lodged with the human rights commission by the society has stated that
there is heightened tension over the last two days because the Navy has refused to let the fishermen go to the sea. A copy of the complaint has been sent by the fishermen society to the SLMM office as well.
