Twelve illegal Buddha statues within Trincomalee town border
According to statistics collected, there are twelve illegal Buddha statues within the Trincomalee town border. This statistics was collected following objections to the sudden appearance of a Buddha statue within the auto stand in the Trincomalee bus stand.
These Buddha statues are situated, in front of the entrance to the Navy camp, in front of the harbour police station, at the Madco junction in front of the Abayapuram round about, in Abayapuram junction (Bandaranayake Mawatta)-in front of the Fort road library, in Konesar road, in front of the Fort entrance, in Srimavopuram (Vijayasekarapuram), in Love lane, in front of the Uppuveli police station, in Mahindapuaram lane, and in front of the Planton point military camp. When the Buddha statue that caused the upheaval is added the total is twelve. There may be many other Buddha statues that have not been include in this statistics. People are frustrated that the town council has made no attempts to take statistics about illegal buildings within its borders and follow it up with some action. People are asking that this action to be taken for the entire Trincomalee district. According to the above mentioned statistics there are also, 5 Christian statues, 5 Hindu temples and one Mosque illegally built within the Trincomalee town council border. These have been there for a long time and have been renovated following the tsunami.
