SLA steps up civilian security checks in Vavuniya
Civilians in Vavuniya are experiencing increased harassment as the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) has dramatically increased the intensity of security checks on the roads and checkpoints of Vavuniya. The rigorous checking has caused fear among residents.
The SLA is ordered to conduct security checks in the presence of police, but interrogations are being conducted without the presence of the local police. The SLA is claiming that the reason for heightened security checks falls under the pretext of the upcoming presidential election. Women are being subjected severe sexual harassment from the SLA, as they undergo questioning. Women who understand Sinhala have stated that the SLA makes derogatory comments in Sinhala as they are being subjected to this ill-treatment.
