
Remembering the Suthanthirapuram massacre of 25 civilians - seven years on
A day commemorating the massacre of the Suthanthirapuram villagers seven years ago and the Lt Col Ammaan remembrance day will be held at the Suthanthirapuram junction today, 10th of June 2005
On 10th of June 1998 the Sri Lankan air force and army executed a planned combined operation against the people of Suthanthirapuram a small village in the Mullaitivu district
in Vanni. The village was shelled from several directions. Shells were fired from Elephant pass, Kaddaikkadu, Maruthankerni and Iyakkkachchi. At the same time it was also bombed from the air. People did not know where to run. At the end of the carnage 25 civilians including women and children were killed and more than 50 civilians were
injured. 
The Sri Sithivinayakar Hindu temple at Suthanthirapuram junction was hit by the bombs and sustained serious damage. The priest, Ramachandra Iyer Ramalinga Sarma, and his wife were also injured in the attack. One of those killed in the massacre is the most loved Lt Col Amma/Anpu. Amma means "mother" and Anpu means love in Tamil. He was nicknamed such for his exceptional work in caring for the most needed.
