“Timely rescue and well coordinated relief arrangements are really commendable”

-UNICEF Executive Director after a visit to Mullaittivu

“Resilience of the people, timely mobilisation of the organisation’s human resources for the rescue and medical operations that has saved valuable lives from death and the well coordinated relief arrangements put in place within so short a time are all really commendable” said Ms. Carol Bellamy Executive Director of UNICEF after a visit to Mullaittivu.

Meeting with Mr.S.P.Tamilselvan at the LTTE Peace Secretariat after her visit to the tidal wave disaster location, the one time township of Mullaittivu, now in shambles and a welfare centre in Mulliyawalai where a part of the displaced are accommodated in the Vidyananda College complex, within which functions the Task Force unit that oversees and coordinates the relief efforts, the UNICEF Chief expressed solidarity with the humanitarian efforts. “UNICEF is there with you in your endeavours to bring back normalcy in these peoples’ lives, an unfortunate lot of the humanity that has been hit many times during the last two decades of war and the tribulations it brought upon them” said Ms.Bellamy in a sombre note and expressed her condolences to the people.

Responding to the kind gesture of the UNICEF chief in visiting the affected areas in the North-East, Mr.Tamilselvan said that UNICEF, as has been the case always, stands out as a unique partner in the humanitarian efforts and its representatives, including the Country Head had responded positively to meet the emergency, co-operating in the coordinated structuring of humanitarian delivery system at a District level. He requested UNICEF to continue its good services to the people in distress and more so the children, many of whom have been made orphans and traumatised.

Ms.Bellamy, expressed her grief over the death of 91 helpless children in the Home near the beach and said that UNICEF will do its best to ensure that its contributions towards the children whether it be in the area of sanitation, drinking water, nutrition or shelter for the displaced as alternative for the welfare centres located in school buildings that need relocation in view of the re-opening of schools. Associated with the Executive Director were Mr.Ted Chaiban, UNICEF Country Head and Ms/Penny Brune of the local division.
