Do not wound our self-respect -
Rev Fr Bernard
Following is the text of the speech delivered by Rev Fr
Bernard of Justice and Peace Commission in the renaissance event "Voice of Tamil Nation" held Sunday at the Kailasapathy Auditorium.
"The purpose of this event is to let the international
community and the south of Sri Lanka knows the outcome of a research conducted among the people of Jaffna. We Tamils are not disrespecting the Sinhala people or the
Buddhist religion. On the contrary we respect that religion
and those people. When we speak of our nationalism we do so while respecting the nationalism of the other people. But we raise our voice demanding that nationalism of other people should not wound our self respect. Chauvinism is the cause of the growing danger of a war that is aimed at destroying us. There are no strong political community or political culture or leadership in south Sri Lankan to defeat this chauvinism. There has been none ever since Sri Lanka got independence. From now on we will determine our own
future"
