Northeast organizations condemn the killing of Mamanithar Pararajasingam

Several organizations in Northeast have issued statements condemning the killing of Mamanithar Pararajasingam. Below are excerpts from three organizations.

Statement of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress issued by leader Mr R Hakim

“During this difficult period when the gap between ethnic communities is increasing and peace is in question, a person who gave his voice to find a solution through democratic means has been silenced.”

“A firm voice for Tamil nationalism has also been silenced. He raised his voice inside and outside of the country for the problems facing the Tamil people. He showed great concern to remove the bitterness that has risen between the Tamil and Muslim people, especially in the east. He was well respected by his people for his steady and calm approach to issues and his ability to find solutions. We remember with gratitude his concerned participation in the meetings between Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and TNA.”

“It is very dangerous to see such killings occurring at this time. It is a warning sign not just for the Northeast, but for the entire country. The people behind this cowardly act only deserve the worst possible punishment because they are taking away the chance for peace that the entire country is yearning for.”

Statement by Consortium of Civilian Associations in Vavuniya

The Consortium of Civilian Associations in Vavuniya demanded that the government bring those responsible for the killing of Mamanithar Pararajasingam in front of the law.

“In the Tamil national journey towards freedom Mamanithar Pararajasingam has raised his voice for peace and human rights for more than twenty years. We condemn the killing, carried out on the birth date of Saviour Jesus Christ during a Christmas mass. Sri Lankan government, security forces and the paramilitaries working with them must take full responsibility for this murder. There is a limit to the patience of the Tamil people yet we still wish to protect the ceasefire agreement. We demand that the Sri Lankan government bring the culprits in front of the law. We also ask the international community to realize the futility of talking about peace without identifying the culprits.”

Statement by the Consortium of Muslim Mosques in Amparai

The Consortium of Muslim Mosques in Amparai held an urgent meeting at the Sainthamaruthu Jumma Mosque on Sunday. In the meeting the issue of the murder of Mamanithar Pararajasingam was discussed and the committee expressed their shock and sadness. The meeting was presided by Moulavi S L M Hanifa and they issued a statement on the shocking murder.

“Even during war time, places of worship were considered as safe refuge. We can not accept such dastardly acts inside places of worship. Last month in Akkaraipattu Jumma Mosque and now in Batticaloa church such cowardly acts have taken place. These acts portray the disgraceful situation. While we convey our condolence to the family members of Mamanithar Pararajasingam, we call upon all humanitarians to ensure the protection of people worshipping in the temples, churches and mosques.”
