
Vavuniya people march demanding the resumption of peace talks
A protest march in Vavuniya on Monday demanding the resumption of peace talks interrupted by the present government drew very large crowds. Memorandums were also submitted to several dignitaries. The march was called by the Consortium of Civilian Based Organizations (CBOs) in Vavuniya. The march started in front of the Vavuniya Maha Vidhyalayam at 10.00 am and passed through Kandy road and the Clock Tower junction and reached the town council grounds.
The march was lead by Vavuniya district members of parliament, Selvam Adaikalanathan, Sivanathan Kishor, Sivasakthi Anandan, and Vinokatharalingam. Thousands joined in the march in spite of the extreme heat and sun. People carried banners with slogans like, “If no peace Tamileelam will be born”, “Let the world know that Tamils are LTTE and LTTE are Tamils”, and “Give the tsunami aid equitably”. When the march reached Vavuniya town council grounds a meeting took place presided by S. Kulathevaraja, president of the consortium of CBOs. Parliamentarians Selvam Adaikalanathan and Sivasakthi Anandan spoke at this meeting. A memorandum to President Kumaratunge demanding immediate resumption of peace talks to bring peace was handed to Vavuniya Government Agent, S.Shanmugam by the president of the consortium of CBOs. Copies of this memorandum was also given to, Secretary General of UN, Norway’s special envoy to Sri Lanka, head of the political section of Tamileelam, head of SLMM, leader of opposition, prime minister, Norway’s ambassador to Sri Lanka, Vavuniya government agent, Vanni area members of parliament, and all diplomatic missions in Colombo.
