Moulavi dispels rumors of Muslim and Tamil friction in Jaffna; speaks of resettlement in Jaffna
Secretary of the Muslim People’s Office in Jaffna, Moulavi L Shakil, dispelled reports that the LTTE is preventing resettlement of the Muslim community in Jaffna. At a press conference in Jaffna town on 1 November, Moulavi stated, “some sinister forces are spreading unfounded allegation in the South that LTTE is obstructing resettlement.” The press conference was held to address the progress of displaced Muslim families resettling in Jaffna.
Moulavi also stated that the LTTE is fully supportive of displaced Muslim families returning to Jaffna and stated an “amicable relationship and understanding now prevails between Muslim and Tamils in Jaffna district.” Reports indicate that factions in the South are releasing propaganda that the LTTE does not support Muslim resettlement in Jaffna. When asked about the 17 November presidential election, Moulavi stated that if Tamils decide to boycott voting, resettled Muslims in Jaffna would join them. He commented that presidential candidates, Ranil Wickremasinghe and Mahinda Rajapakse are not making any efforts in addressing the issues raised by the Tamil community. It is also worth noting that the LTTE is making additional relationship-building efforts between the Tamil and the Muslim communities. A recent example took place on 30 October when Jaffna’s LTTE political wing gave relief items to resettling Muslim families as they began celebrating the month-long Ramadan festival.
