Protest in Muthur and rising tension in Trincomalee
Protest against the security forces was held in Muthur in the Trincomalee district on Wednesday condemning the shooting and killing of a young man who came to Muthur from Sampoor. Chitravel Sathianathan was shot and killed on Monday in the government controlled area of Muthur by unidentified persons.
Transport in the area came to a standstill. Commercial outlets, schools, government offices, and non-governmental offices were all closed on Wednesday. There was some tension in the area and the number of security personnel was also increased on that day. In the meantime, security forces suddenly opened fire in the 58th Milepost in Menkamam area. There was confusion, fear and heightened tension in Trincomalee as a result. People in the nearby village of Kiliveddi moved out of their homes and displaced to Mallikaitivu. By afternoon the situation calmed down and most of the people returned to their home. There were conflicting reports about the cause of the firing. One report said that a grenade was thrown at a military vehicle and another said that increased tension between Tamil youth and the military was the cause of the firing.
