UNP supports LTTE’s ‘common structure’ for reconstruction
Sri Lankan main opposition, the United National Party (UNP) has warned the government that Sri Lanka may not get the promised international aid if Colombo fails to reach a consensus with the LTTE in formulating a ‘common structure’ for the reconstruction efforts related to the tsunami impact in the NorthEast region.
In the absence of viable modalities for humanitarian delivery and formulation of reconstruction plans for the tsunami hit NorthEast coast, the LTTE has suggested a realistic common structure and reiterated the necessity of such a mechanism in the region to the government through the facilitators to the peace process. Though it is reliably learnt that many rounds of discussions have taken place between the government and the LTTE, no tangible results are evident as yet. International community too is pressurising the government to bring about the consensus required to put in place such a ‘common structure’ to effectively carry out rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts, said Dr.Rajitha Senaratna, a UNP legislator and a former minister in the cabinet of Mr.Ranil Wickremasinghe. Dr. Senaratna also lamented that relief operations in other parts of the island too are not satisfactory and there are complaints of corruption and bureaucratic mishandling.
Dry rations to the value of Rs.375/- assured in the ration card for the displaced, are not being distributed evenly in all locations and the rice that is issued is unfit for human consumption, said Dr. Senaratna. Wheat flour (14 kilos), though included in the card, is not issued anywhere, pointed out the spokesperson. Justifying his party’s dissatisfaction, Dr. Senaratna said that both, the National and International NGO’s have amply voiced the unsatisfactory state of affairs.
