New UNICEF head visits Kilinochchi

Head of UNICEF, Ms Ann Margaret Veneman, visited Kilinochchi today 18th June and held talks with the LTTE Political Wing leader Mr T S Tamilchelvan.

The delegation arrived at the LTTE Peace Secretariat at 10.30 am and held discussions with Mr T S Tamilchelvan till 12 noon. Accompanying Ms Veneman was, Mr Toshi Niwa from UNICEF head office, Mr Ted Chaiban, UNICEF country representative for Sri Lanka, and Ms Penny Brune, of UNICEF Kilinochchi office.

With Mr T S Tamilchelvan, deputy leader of LTTE Political Wing Mr S Thankan, Secretary General of the LTTE Peace Secretariat Mr Puledevan and Liason officer for Non Governmental organizations, Mr Thiagaraja took part in the discussions.

Talking to the media after the meeting Ms Veneman said that the children in NorthEast have been badly affected by the war and the tsunami. She is aware that the people are very impatient to begin rebuilding the region. She said that UNICEF is also very impatient to do this task.

Mr S.P Tamilchelvan following the meeting talked separately to the media. He said that children are so badly affected by the war and tsunami that their future appears empty. He added that LTTE has started many schemes to ameliorate the situation. UNICEF delegation has acknowledged the situation of the children and the schemes initiated by the LTTE. UNICEF delegation has expressed their desire to work with the LTTE to give a future to the children.

Ms Veneman arrived in Kilinochchi by helicopter at 9.15 am and immediately proceeded to visit Parathipuram, a rural village in Kilinochchi. There they visited the Parathipuram school and talked to the school principal.

The delegation left Kilinochchi by helicopter at 12.30 pm.
