Australian and Korean medical doctors move to the East
East needs more medical aidTwo teams of medical doctors from Australia and Korea arrived in Kilinchchi yesterday 3 Jan 2005 to help medical relief teams in the North, have left for Batticaloa-Amparai.
After studying need assessment reports available at the LTTE Planning and Development Secretariat (PDS) on arrival at Kilinochchi and realising the inadequacy of medical facilities in the wake of the recent floods and bad sanitary conditions in the welfare centres that pose a threat of infectious diseases, the teams decided to proceed to the East The doctors also recognised the destruction of many medical institutions in the East necessitating ad hoc medical centres and also the already acute shortage of doctors in the region. After a group study at the PDS, the teams also had discussions with the Head of the Tamil Eelam Health Services, who concurred with their decision and encouraged them to proceed to the East.
