“Cease Fire Agreement under serious threat"
– Tamilselvan
In a joint meeting of the Norwegian Ambassador as facilitator to the peace process and the acting head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) today at the peace secretariat at Kilinochchi, Mr. S.P.Tamilselvan, Head of the LTTE Political Wing said that the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) is under serious threat by actions and inactions of the Sri Lankan Government.
Mr. Tamilselvan focused special attention on the fragile state of the CFA in the context of violent killings that take place in government controlled areas, the negative attitude adopted by the Sri Lankan Government in arranging transport of LTTE commanders and divisional heads of Batticaloa-Amparai and Trincomalee who have come to Kilinochchi for discussions with the leadership a month ago and still waiting for transport through government controlled areas with proper security, religious tension that is brewing up in areas where fanatical elements are engaged in erecting statues of Lord Buddha with military security and inducement. Lamenting over the delay in arriving at a consensus at the government level to sign the Joint Mechanism for post tsunami management, Mr. Tamilselvan said that the military is engaged in an undeclared economic embargo in certain parts of the east complimented by allegations that an air strip is being erected in Mutur. He requested the Ambassador and the acting Head of the SLMM to interact with the government constructively and respond soon on the matter of transport of commanders and cadres, so that the LTTE may review its position on this matter. If the government, in keeping with the terms of agreement in the CFA, cannot guarantee security for the transport, Mr. Tamilselvan said that the LTTE may have to consider reverting back to its own transport arrangement as was practiced prior to the CFA.
Mr. Hans Brattskar, the Norwegian Ambassador and the acting head of the SLMM assured that they will bring these matters to the notice of the government on their return to Colombo and would endeavour to have the transport arrangement of the commanders and Cadres made earlier. Mr. Nadesan, Chief of Tamil Eelam Police and Mr. Ilanthirayan, Political Head of the Batticaloa-Amparai District and Mr. Puleedevan, Secretary General of the Peace Secretariat also took part in the meeting.
