Tharshini goes regularly to her aunt’s house to spend the night with her aunt and return to her home the next day morning. Family and friends realized that she has gone missing only the next day morning when she did not return to her home as usual. Their search for Tharshini led them to a well near the Sri Lankan Navy camp where her dead body was found. Police and SLMM were informed immediately.
The body of Tharshini was recovered from the well in the presence of police and SLMM on December 18th and was taken to postmortem examination. Villagers of Pungudithivu are furious suspecting the Sri Lankan Navy for the rape and murder of Tharshini. Villagers say that several boots marks of the type worn by Sri Lankan Navy as well as a Navy hat were found around the well. At 9.00 am on December 18th villagers staged a protest against the Navy. Navy opened fire on the protesters and one elderly man was injured. Tension prevails in Punguduthivu.
