
Commission for Environmental Governance opens in Kilinochchi
The inauguration of the Commission for Environmental
Governance was opened in Kilinochchi on Saturday 23rd July 2005 at the Planning and Development Secretariat (PDS) in Kilinochchi. The deputy Secretary General of PDS, Mr Ranjan, in his opening speech said that the desire to protect the
environment is present in all institutions in Tamileelam. He
said that this has been one of the prime concerns of the
Tamil national leader.
 Dr. Jeyasingam speaking about the natural resources of
Tamileelam said that war, tsunami and lack of awareness
among people have been the causes of environmental damage in
Tamileelam. He mentioned the threats posed by the
Pathineeyam weed that has found its way into the land, the
Sethusamuthram canal project as examples that could pose
challenges. He also said that it is important to look into
alternate technology with the view to minimize the damage to
environment. Speaking about the philosophy behind the governance of
environment Dr Sriskandaraja said environment includes the
living and the non-living part of nature and humans are not
separate from it but part of that nature. He said he noticed
an increase sale of insecticide and this can be arrested by
laws to control the sale of insecticides. Mr Selvin speaking about the structure of the commission
said that there would be an information section, a law
making section, environmental promotion section. Leader of the LTTE political Mr S P Tamilselvan in his
speech said that even during the height of was Tamil
national leader gave priority to environment protection. He
added that the war waged by the security forces was not only
against the people but also against the natural resources of
the Tamil homeland.
