Two journalists attacked at the home of assassinated Intelligence Officer, Lt. Col. Tuwan Rizwi Meed
Two journalists from the Colombo weekly The Sunday Leader were assaulted by a violent crowd as they arrived at the residence of the slain Intelligence Officer, Lt. Col. Tuwan Rizwi Meedin. Feature Editor Ranee Mohamed and Photographer Berty Mendis arrived at the residence in Kiribathgoda on the morning of 1 November to interview his wife and relatives concerning Lt. Col. Meedin’s assassination when they were confronted by the fierce crowd.
Before the journalists could enter the house, enraged attackers reportedly grabbed Mohamed by the neck and threw Mendis to the ground. The attackers took camera equipment and other personal items from the journalists. The crowd attempted to set fire to the vehicle that the journalists arrived in, but they were stopped by the driver who claimed it was his vehicle. Eyewitnesses said the journalists escaped further assaults and went to the Kiribathgoda police station to file a report. There is speculation that the crowd turned their anger toward the journalists because The Sunday Leader is possibly perceived as an anti-Sinhalese publication.
Lt. Col. Meedin, a high ranking senior intelligence officer a part of Colombo's Second Army Intelligence Unit, was assassinated inside his car Saturday night near his residence. Police are continuing with investigations into the assassination.
