Three days of carnage in Vanni during Heroes’ day commemoration and the days following

Sri Lanka launched a massive campaign of carnage in Vanni as the people and the LTTE began their three days of Maveerar commemoration on 25 November. The aerial bombing has continued incessantly ever since seriously affecting the daily lives of people.

25 Nov: Early on that day Sri Lanka began the campaign of carnage with the bombing of Tharmapuram settlement in the Kilinochchi district at 7.30am. Four people died and five were injured in this bombing and homes were destroyed.

On the same morning at 8.45am a claymore attack in Oddusuddan killed two civilians. One of those killed is the school student, S Kiritharan, a student at Mu/Puthukkidiyiruppu Sri Subramanium Vidhyalam. 26 Nov: The following day two separate sorties were carried out, one in Puthukkudiyiruppu and the other in Jeyanthinagar in Kilinochchi. There were no casualties in these two bombings. Homes and roads were destroyed. People from 50 homes displaced following this bombing. The damages caused by the Puthukkudiyiruppu bombing collated by the local government official, Grama-Sevakar, Kanagasuntharaswamy, are:

1. Home of Mahalingasivam & Valliammai, Ward 2, worth Rupees 5 million completely destroyed.

2. Home of Chellaih Kanahaih, Ward 2, worth Ruppes 2.5 million completely damaged.

3. Home of S Jeevanantham, Ward 2, worth Ruppes 2.5 million sustained heavy damages.

4. Home of S Thasaratharajakumaran, Ward 2, worth Rupees 30 million sustained heavy damages.

5. Homes of Ponnaih Selvaratnam, S Thangavel, Velupillai Suntharalingam, Kulanthaivelu Rasenthiram and Mahalingam Sivakumar, all Ward 2, sustained serious damages.

The time was 5.00pm and most of the residents were at home. They escaped by seeking safety in their drenches. Children from these homes remain traumatized by the experience. Son of Thasaratharajakumaran, 10 year old Thilakson, an epileptic child, has been seriously affected by the trauma.

The Jeyanthinagar bombing damaged many civilian buildings. They include,

1. Ayurvedic (Native medicine) hospital sustained severe damages. Roof and windows are destroyed. Walls have cracked in many places. The damages are estimated at Rupees 3 million.

2. It cracked the walls of an inpatient hospital for mentally ill women severely affecting their condition. The same spot was subjected to another round of bombing on 28 November.

27 Nov: On the final of the three day commemoration the campaign reached a further peak when a claymore attack on a vehicle carrying school children killed six school children and three adults. For further details click the following links: http://www.ltteps.org/?view=2065&folder=2

On that same day at 4.30pm the Voice of Tigers (VoT) building was bombed, killing three employees of the VoT and seriously injuring two employees and a further ten sustained less serious injuries. Seven civilians traveling on A9 road just in front of the building were also killed and another eight were injured. The damages caused to buildings are:

1. The building of the VoT flattened.

2. The public library sustained severe damages.

3. The adjacent UN building of the WFP was destroyed.

4. The building of FORUT international organizations was also damaged.

5. Many private houses and shops near A9 road were damaged and destroyed.

28 Nov: Sri Lanka bombed civilian settlements near Jeyanthinagar, the same location bombed on 26 November. The road was made unusable and shrapnel fell within two children’s homes located nearby. Shrapnel also fell inside the Kilinochchi Hindu College area. One child from Kanthi Illam Children’s Home was injured by the shrapnel.
