LTTE Political Delegation in The Netherlands

The LTTE Political Delegation led by Mr.S.P.Tamilselvan, in its first leg in The Netherlands, met with Professor Dr.Ir.Georg Freks of the Social Sciences Group, Wageningen on 6th April 2005.

At the outset the Professor expressed his condolences for the tsunami victims in the NorthEast and presented his impressions of the post-tsunami management carried out in the NorthEast and elsewhere, borne out of his study tour of the regions in February. Reflecting on the thinking of the Donor Nations and the fear of a ‘Donor Fatigue’ that may set in, the Professor stressed on the urgency of structuring the proposed Joint Mechanism between the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and the LTTE. “Humanitarian plight of the affected people dictates that the parties arrive at a consensus and make the proposal a reality very soon” said the Professor.

In response to the Professor’s concern for the people affected by tsunami, an asymmetric impact in view of a two decade old war background, Mr.Tamilselvan explained in detail the various steps taken by the LTTE in post-tsunami management with the help of the Tamil Diaspora, the Tamils Rehabilitation Organization (TRO), mobilized units of the LTTE, Civilian Based Organizations, UN Agencies and the INGO’s. He also said that the LTTE has exercised maximum flexibility in accepting Norway’s draft for a Joint Mechanism which is yet to be agreed upon by the Government.

The delegation is scheduled to meet with The Netherland’s Foreign Ministry officials on 7th April 2005.
