“Attack on people will lead to increased tension in the prevailing fragile situation"

-LTTE Political head office

Political Head Office of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam condemns the attack by the military on the people protesting peacefully and warned this kind of incidents will lead to increased tension in the prevailing fragile situation.

Full text of the Press release issued from its Head office in Kilinochchi:

More than 2000 people were taking part in a peaceful protest today at 8.30 am in Valaichenai in Batticaloa demanding the removal of a new military checkpoint near the Santhiveli school on the main road between Batticaloa and Valaichenai. Tamil National Alliance Members of Parliament, S.Jeyananthamoorthy, P.Ariyenthiran, T.Kanagasabai and Thangeswari were also taking part in the protest.

During the protest the military and the police got together and opened fire at the protesters at 9.30 a.m. They also started beating up the people. A 65 year old man Kandasamy died on the spot. Sixteen protesters including school students and one journalist were injured and admitted to hospital. During this mindless action of the military SLMM monitors were also present and were observing the shooting and the beating.

Blocking peaceful protest by the people using arms and violence is against the rules of ceasefire and will affect the validity of the ceasefire agreement. People have the right to take part in peaceful protest to win their rights and to show their opposition.

People hoped that the three year ceasefire will bring about an end to the restrictions placed on their lives and they will be able to return to their own homes and lead a normal life. Though none of this has happened, the military threats and checking have intensified. This is creating fear and anger among the people. When people tried to oppose through peaceful protest the setting up of new camps and checkpoints, and the increasing military threats they have been attacked with blind violence.

We severely condemn the attack by the military on the people protesting peacefully. We fear that incidents like this will weaken the confidence people have on the ceasefire agreement and create anger among the people and will lead to increased tension in the prevailing fragile situation.
