“WFP is doing a valuable service to war and Tsunami affected people”
-Tamilselvan tells WFP Ambassador
“In the context of destruction caused by two decades of war and tsunami in December 2005, the Tamil people and their representatives, the LTTE, fully appreciate the valuable services rendered by WFP in the areas of hunger and malnutrition” said Mr.S.P.Tamilselvan, Head of the Political Wing in a meeting with Ambassador Poul Skytte Christoffersen, WFP Executive President today 10 October 2005 at the Peace Secretariat in Kilinochchi.
The Ambassador who was visiting Kilinochchi after a tour of the Jaffna peninsula, had extensive discussions with the Political Head on matters related to WFP’s projects in the Tamil homeland and the political aspects of the programme’s future plans for 2006 and 2007. Touching on his impressions of the devastation caused by both the war and lately tsunami, the Ambassador said that he was highly impressed with the work done locally at places like Mullaittivu, a location, he said, that clearly indicates the extent of damage caused by war and tsunami. On the Ambassador expressing keen interest in the background to the armed conflict, Mr.Tamilselvan traced the non-violent political struggles the Tamil people and their political leaders were engaged in since 1948 and how the people opted through popular vote in 1977 to secede from the body politic of Sri Lanka. It is this mandate, Mr.Tamilselvan said, that motivated the youths of the seventies to take up arms against oppressive military means to suppress the yearning for freedom from oppression. “The Cease Fire Agreement (CFA), having failed to deliver normalcy to the people, who hoped to get back to their natural habitats and engage in their usual livelihood of farming and fishing but denied access because of adamant military occupation of their homesteads, it is very essential that the WFP continue with its poverty alleviation, freedom from hunger and malnutrition projects till such time meaningful political negotiations bring about a change” reiterated Mr.Tamilselvan. Associated with the Admbassador in the meeting were Mr.Jeff Taft-Dick, Representative and Country Director WFP and the WFP’s local representative. The Deputy Head of the Political Division Mr.Thangan and Secretary General of the Peace Secretariat also participated in the meeting.
