SLA violates ceasefire agreement by using paramilitary groups

– LTTE discussed violations with SLMM officials-

Mr S Elilan, Trincomalee head of the LTTE political wing, met with Sri Lankan Monitoring Mission (SLMM) officials on 31 October for one hour to report several ceasefire violations committed by the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) and its paramilitary groups.

Mr Elilan and LTTE officials based in Trincomalee informed SLMM that they have evidence to confirm that the SLA soldiers, with paramilitary groups, have made arbitrary attacks on LTTE cadres in the Vahari division of the Batticaloa District. LTTE reported that paramilitary members were seen escaping to SLA camp after confronting LTTE cadres. LTTE stressed the ceasefire agreement’s stipulation that all paramilitary forces must be removed from Northeast.

LTTE also notified the SLMM that army forces have been unlawfully limiting travel to civilians and vehicles coming from Muttur east villages at the Kaddaiparichchan checkpoint, stopping passage at 7 p.m. The checkpoint, previously open twenty-four hours daily, poses a serious threat to patients seeking urgent medical care at hospitals in government-controlled areas. In addition, SLA is enforcing restrictions on civilians traveling with kerosene and diesel for domestic and agricultural use. Unnecessary intrusive body checks are routinely conducted by SLA to all passengers traveling by bus or other vehicles.

LTTE stressed to SLMM officials that the severe violations are causing fear among Tamil civilians and they are questioning the significance of the ceasefire agreement.
