“Joint Post-Tsunami Management Mechanism would strengthen the Peace Process”

-Deputy Director General, EU
“Peace Process would be strengthened by mutual confidence building through a joint mechanism with the participation of all parties in the post-Tsunami reconstruction activities” said Deputy Director General Herve Jouanjean, External Relations, EU Commission in Brussels today 17 March 2005 in a meting with the LTTE Political team led by Mr.S.P.Tamilselvan, Head of the Political Division.

Mr.Tamilselvan explained to Mr. Herve Jouanjean the current status of the proposed joint mechanism for post-Tsunami reconstruction activities and assured the EU that the LTTE is committed to extend maximum flexibility in the formulation of the proposals for a joint mechanism. Commenting on the incidents of violence and killings of LTTE members in the military occupied areas, Mr.Tamilselvan said the CFA clause 1.8 relating to the activities of armed groups is not being implemented and the Government should be pro- active in ensuring that the law and order situation in the GoSL areas is taken seriously.

The Deputy Director General said that he is convinced about the seriousness and sincerity of the parties in the formulation of a joint mechanism and requested that both the parties act with circumspection without giving room to narrow political considerations.

Earlier in the day, the LTTE team had meetings with Mr. Johan Maricou, Leader Asia Section, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Belgium and Mr.Henri Schumacher, Head of Council Working Group on Asia, Mission of Luxembourg to the EU.

In a meeting later in the day with Mr.Pierre Vaesen, Minister of Development, Belgium, the LTTE team discussed the modalities pertaining to the working of the proposed joint mechanism and assured that the LTTE would be very much willing to support and implement such a mechanism in the background of its efforts to build confidence and make progress in the peace process.
