Tamileelam Students Uprising Day
The first Tamil who sacrificed his life fighting the oppressive Sinhala regime was student Sivakuman. In 1974 he was about to be arrested by the police in Jaffna when he took his life to avoid being arrested. S J V Selvanayagam respected by the Tamils as the father of Tamil struggle said at Sivakumarn’s funeral,
“Mahatma Gandhi took the struggle of his country’s liberation along the path of non-violence but also accepted the alternative path took by Bagavathsingh. Similarly I accept Sivakuman’s path to our struggle as well.” This was 31 years ago. Tamil students have marked this day as the Tamileelam Students Uprising day since. In the statement issued by the Tamil students to mark the day in 2005 the students have declared that it is the duty of the Tamil students to establish the protection for the Tamils by taking back our land. It further said, “Sinhala chauvinism tried to eliminate the strength of the Tamil students. Yet because we have gained strength through our understanding of Sinhala chauvinism, Tamil nation stands strengthened. Sinhala chauvinism not only took our educational rights through discrimination and standardisation, it also denied us higher education and tried to convert us into a group without even the right to jobs.”
“Student strength is a great force. It has taken forward many revolutions and liberation struggles. When the Tamil nation is facing such a struggle, super powers, chauvinists, and regional powers are trying to enslave us. Come forward to break this and win the rights that belong to the Tamil nation.” On June 2nd students marched in large numbers throughout the Northeast to mark the day. In Jaffna large number of students started their march from Jaffna Hindu Ladies college carrying placard and shouting slogans. They reached Jaffna Hindu College and held a meeting there. In Killinochcho, the march started from the Kilinochchi central grounds at 10.00 a.m. and reached Lt Col. Chandran park. A meeting was held at this park. In Mullaitivu, the march started in front of the Puthukkudiyiruppu hospital and proceeded to the Puthukkidiyiruppu Central College. The parade included scenes depicting torture of students by the security forces. In Vavuniya, the march started at 10.30 a.m. from Rampaikulam Girls School and ended in Vavuniya Mathya Maha Vidhyalayam. A meeting took place at this school.
