NESOHR celebrates international human rights day

NESOHR celebrated international human rights day on Saturday December 10th (today) at the Cultural Hall in Kilinochchi. The theme of the event this year was “Self determination for the peoples of the world contributes to global peace”. A large crowd attended the event in spite of the bad whether.

The event was presided by NESOHR chairperson Fr M X Karunaratnam. In his opening address he said that the Sri Lankan government and the world should not continue to ignore the self determination rights of the Tamil people. In his address chief guest Mr S P Tamilselvan elaborated on the self determination rights of the Tamil people using the human rights instruments of the United Nations. In his key note address Mr S Sivapalan from Trincomalee also went over the history of the denial of self determination rights of the Tamil people.

Several University teachers from Jaffna University also came for the event. Vice Chancellor of University of Jaffna gave short speech extending his good wishes for the event and to NESOHR. Government Agent for Kilinochchi Mr Rasanayagam also extened his good wishes for NESOHR at the event. Representatives from all the districts of Northeast attended the event and poke passionately about the human rights situation in their district. A team of people from Colombo led by Mr Jehan Perera, Director of the National Peace Council, also came just for the event.

The key event of the day was the panel discussion on the theme of the day. Mr Jehan Perera and members of NESOHR were the panelists who received questions and comments from the floor. People passionately expressed their views on their right to self determination and called upon those from the south to take the message back to their people.
