Government is indirectly aiding the physical attacks by chauvinists
- Consortium of Non-Governmental Associations
The Consortium of Non-Governmental Associations in Kilinochchi has issued a condemnation of the government for the recent attacks by chauvinists in Batticaloa and Trincomalee. It said the government is indirectly aiding the chauvinists who attacked the TRO office in Batticaloa and the Sinhala thugs who attacked Tamil people in Alioluwa and Senuwara areas in Trincomalee.
The TRO office in Baticaloa was attacked on the 13th of this month with grenades and one worker in the TRO office, Pakiaraja Thanabalan, was injured and taken to hospital. On the 18th of this month Sinhala thugs attacked Tamils in Alioluwa and Senuwara areas. At this time a TRO heavy vehicle was also set alight and the boats in the vehicle were also burnt down. The driver of the vehicle was also attacked. The vehicle was carrying material for the people affected by the tsunami. The SLMM vehicle in which SLMM personnel went to observe the incidents was also attacked. The statement by the consortium said that it believes that the government is indirectly aiding these attackers. It further said, “SLMM is an organization for peace and monitoring. We severely condemn the act of throwing stones on the SLMM personnel. We also severely condemn attacks on TRO that is serving the people of all communities and of religions without discrimination. We demand the government to pay compensation to TRO for the loss it sustained in these attacks. These attacks by the Sinhala thugs are creating an environment that is not conducive for peace. We request all the people in the country to take necessary actions for the safe functioning of TRO”
