Civilian Based Organizations demand justice for murder of Kausalyan
Civilian Based Organizations Collective (CBOs) in Killinochchi demands justice for the killing of Kousalyan and four others through letter addressed to the head of SLMM. The letter was submitted following a massive civilian protest against the killing organized by the CBOs in Killinochchi. The full text of the letter follows:
Full text: We the Civilian Based Organizations Collective in Killinochci sent you a letter condemning the recent murders in the east. Today thousands of people in our district held a mass protest to express their anger and grief and this letter to you is the expression of the feelings of the people at the mass protest.
We condemn the planned murder of Kausalyan and other Tamil representatives on 7.02.2005 which is in clear violation of the ceasefire agreement that has been in place for the last three years. Murders and other ceasefire violations have been committed by those against peace since the ceasefire was signed. We are very disappointed and saddened that the government, an equal signatory to the ceasefire agreement, has taken no action so far to improve the situation. It is internationally accepted that a government in control of land must also take the responsibility for persistent murders taking place in the land under their control. We are deeply concerned that government’s neglect of this responsibility will destroy the potential for peace. We in the Northeast have faced the worst of the tsunami destructions. Yet even after this tragedy the government instead of approaching the issues on a humanitarian basis is treating us like a step mother. We also believe that behind the scene the government is assisting these planned murders. We want you the SLMM together with the international community to conduct a just and speedy inquiry into the murders. We earnestly hope that you will carry out the responsibility given to you under the ceasefire agreement with greater vigour and protect civilians and LTTE cadres who respecting the ceasefire and the feelings of the Tamils to maintain peace carry out their political duties in the government controlled areas unarmed. We trust that you will treat these requests from us, who as people have accepted the UN declaration of the rights of people, with due care and await your action.
