Sri Lankan Navy denies fishing in the East coasts
Sri Lankan Eastern regional Navy Commander has declared indefinite restrictions for fishing in the eastern sea. Especially, these restrictions on fishing have been imposed from Trincomalee harbour to Koneswaram Fort Naval Base.
The Navy also stated that any fishing boats that go into the zone would be considered a threat and will be attacked. Fishermen are suffering for their day-to-day life due to these restrictions. Already the Sri Lankan Navy has denied fishermen from entering the sea along Jaffna peninsula, from Vadamaradchi east to Valikamam east. Besides this, fishermen from Vankalai in Mannar and their boats were detained by the Navy when they went fishing today (9th January 2006) early morning. At the same time, the Sri Lankan Navy and the Police also carried out search operations and investigations in Vankalai.
