Tamils throughout the Northeast are commemorating the 19th year anniversary of Thileepan, a martyr of the Tamileelam struggle.
Martyr Thileepan fasted unto death in September 1987, during the period when Indian military was stationed in the Northeast. He put forward 5 requests to the government of India. His requests included, the removal of the Sri Lankan military from schools and halting of new Sinhala settlements. He began his fast unto death on 15 September 1987. However the government of India remained insensitive to the requests of Martyr Thileepan. He attained martyrdom on the 12th day of his fast on 26th September 1987. Tamil National Leader V. Prabaharan participated in today's commemoration. Tamil people in the Northeast and all over the world commemorate the sacrifice of Martyr Thileepan for 12 days beginning today. In Tamil homeland, Departments, Commercial institutions, schools and private co-operations commemorate the sacrifice of Martyr Thileepan.
