Tamil daily distributor’s shop burnt
The Tamil daily Veerakesari distributor’s shop, Murugesu and Son Stores, was burnt to the ground in Batticaloa town on Saturday, 5 August in the early morning. The shop is located 75 metres from a Sri Lankan Army (SLA) camp near the Batticaloa Clock tower. Following GoSL operated forces’ death threats and the SLA’s blockage of newspaper distributors into Batticaloa, residents in the area stated this was carried out by GoSL operated forces.
Veerakesari is printed in Colombo and delivered to Batticaloa daily by a private bus. The owner of the bus transportation has been threatened by GoSL operated forces and warned not to deliver the newspapers to Muruges Son Stores, Sudaroli and Thinnakural. A newspaper distributor of the Jaffna Tamil dailies was killed by a claymore attack in Achchuvely, Jaffna on 27 July.
