Religious leaders sit-in to highlight international silence on the massacres of Tamils

Christian clergy, Hindu priests, and Islamic religious heads took part in a sit-in to highlight and protest the silence of the international community over the recent massacres of Tamils. The sit-in took place in front UNHCR office in Kilinochchi. The religious leaders issued their grave concern over the silence of the international community, human rights bodies and UN agencies during a time when Tamil civilians are being killed by Sri Lankan armed forces and its paramilitaries in government controlled areas of the Northeast.

The religious leaders handed over to letter addressed to the UN General Secretary Mr. Koffi Annan, appealing to him to take steps to stop the killings. The letter was handed to the UNHCR official, Mr. Marin Din Kajdomchaj. In their letter to UN Secretary General, the religious leaders said, In addressing one of the latest atrocities of the killing of 13 civilians in Kayts, Jaffna they said, “Irrefutable evidence exists that the killings of civilians in the islets are perpetrated by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) soldiers and collaborating paramilitaries.”

Mr. Marin Din Kajdomchaj who received the memorandum told the religious leaders that he is fully aware of the current violence targeting civilians in the north and assured he would send the memorandum to the Secretary General with his report.

Investigations by the judge into the Allaipiddy massacre of 13 civilians

Witnesses at the investigations into the massacre of 13 civilians in an islet off the coast of Jaffna told the investigating judge that Sri Lankan Navy has direct involvement in the massacres.

The judge earlier pointed out that the witnesses feel terrorized and are not able give evidence in safety. The judge told the police chief that a special committee including senior police officers, SLMM monitors, and ICRC officials must be setup and the evidence must be obtained in front of this committee. However, no such arrangements were made for the witnesses.

One witness said that her brother was sprayed with bullets by those who spoke Tamil with Sinhala accent.

The Government Agent of Jaffna, K Kanesh, also visited the terrorized people of Allaipiddy who are still staying in the PhilipNeri church because they are too frightened to go back to their homes. He promised the people that he will try to obtain some form of protection for them froma UN organization.

Young man shot and killed in Northeast in Jaffna

Sangaralingam Sasinthiran (29) of Selvanayakapuram in Trincomalee was shot and killed on 17 May 2006 at 5.30 pm, while he was traveling in a three-wheeler. The incident took place near the Selvanayakapuram Hindu Mahavidhyalam School.
