SLA continues with unwarranted military strikes in Trincomalee
The Sri Lankan armed forces continued with its unwarranted military campaign, into today, Wednesday, 9 August. From Wednesday morning into the evening, the SLA has been carrying out artillery fire, aerial bombardments, and multi-barrel shelling into the LTTE areas of Verugal and Eachchilampattu.
Due to the heavy military strikes, civilians from these areas have already fled and are continuing to flee to safer areas. The Sri Lankan armed forces continue to strike in abandoned villages as well as passages in which displaced civilians are traveling through. Five civilians were killed today, Wednesday in Verugal as a result of this military bombardment on the displacing civilians. Close to 40,000 civilians are already without food or water and are living in a dire situation due to the SLA military actions. Civilians are desperate to escape the military strikes and those who already have are suffering due to lack of relief and unsanitary living conditions in refugee camps. To address the critical plight of the civilians, LTTE Trincomalee Political Head S Elilan strongly urged the SLMM to place more pressure on the Government of Sri Lanka to immediately end all military strikes against civilians in LTTE areas.
