
SLA tightens its noose on Jaffna students
SLA warning to Directors of Education
Directors of the five education zones in Jaffna as well as other senior education officers in Jaffna were called for a special meeting with the SLAFs chief of Jaffna Maj Gen Chandrasri at the Palaly military camp.
At this meeting Chandrasri instructed the Directors and other officers that students must not be permitted to take part in protest marches demanding Tamil rights. He told the meeting that students must be involved in their education and not in protests. Students returning from educational tour harassed at Muhamalai A group of students from Chavakachcheri Hindu College in Jaffna who were returning from an education tour to Kilinochchi were harassed by the SLA at the Muhamalai checkpoint. The day tour to Kilinochchi arrived at the Muhamalai checkpoint on their way back home at 4.00 pm on Tuesday. They were held at the checkpoint for two hours. Each student was asked to fill a form requesting all their details and they were also threatened during questioning. Two teachers who accompanied the students and the driver were also threatened during questioning. The following day, on Wednesday, the SLA entered the school fully armed and demanded further information about the students who went to Kilinochchi. The school principal was called to the 522 Division camp at Vembirai and subjected threats and interrogation for three hours. The principal is traumatised following this. Jaffna University Students Union decides to restart final year lectures The Jaffna University Students union at their meeting on Thursday decided to restart the lectures for the final year students. Students have been boycotting lectures following the terror campaign conducted by the SLAFs and its paramilitaries during the months of December and January. Student Union then decided that students will boycott lectures until there is an end to this terror situation. The statement issued by the Student Union after the Thursday meeting states that although the excessive presence of SLA in the University surrounds has not decreased they have decided to restart final year lectures for the benefit of the final year students. The statement further added that they hoped that there will be a return to normalcy which has not happened.
