Sharp increase in SLA attacks inside LTTE area since Oslo meeting

11 Attacks in 6 days; 21 people killed; 20 people injured.

7 June, Batticaloa: A claymore attack in Vadamunai killed 10 civilians including three children. A further 14 civilians were injured. Villagers were traveling in a tractor-trailer from Vadamunai to Kiran when their tractor was attacked by a landmine planted by the SLA very near Vadamunai village.

8 June, Mannar: At 12.45 pm, an SLA claymore attack killed two civilians. The transport vehicle, belonging to a contracting firm, Thuppara, traveling from Pallamadu towards Sannar tank in the LTTE area was hit and the two workers were killed instantly.

8 June, Kilinochchi: At 11.45 am, a SLA claymore attack targeted a Mobile Health Unit traveling in the LTTE area seriously wounding the civilian driver and a civilian nurse. The nurse later died of the injuries in hospital. The doctor and another civilian nurse were injured in the attack.

9 June, Mullaitivu: At night the SLA attacked a vehicle in Oddusuddan.

9 June, Mannar: At night SLA attacked a vehicle in Pallamadu.

10 June, Mannar: A senior LTTE commander, Lt Col Mahendi, and three more LTTE members were killed when a SLA claymore hit the vehicle traveling in Vellankulam.

10 June, Vavuniya: SLA attacked a farmer returning from his field in Putur. He died of the injuries in hospital.

10 June, Vavuniya: SLA claymore attack in Nedunkerni hit a NEIAP vehicle, injuring two civilians. NEIAP is a World Bank funded project aimed at rehabilitation of the agricultural industry in Northeast.

11 June, Vavuniya: Two civilians were killed in a SLA claymore attack as they were traveling by motorbike in Palaipani around 10.00 am.

12 June: Vavuniya: A vehicle belonging to the Assistant Government Agent (AGA) for Nedunkerni came under claymore attack by the SLA deep penetration unit. The attack occurred on the Puliyankulam-Nedunkerni Road in Sannasiparanthan. The AGA Pathmanathan was injured and the driver N Balasingam (57) was seriously injured and later died in the hospital.

12 June, Vavuniya: A SLA claymore attacked a vehicle traveling along the Nedunkerni-Mulliayavalai road in Kalikadu at 12.50 pm. The vehicle was damaged but no one was hurt. The vehicle was carrying pilgrims to a famous Hindu temple, Vatrapallai Amman temple, for the annual festival on the night of 12 June. SLMM visited all of the sites of claymore attacks and noted details.
