Reported SLA kidnapping of young Tamil girl; investigation continues

It was reported in all local media that a young girl riding on her bicycle was stopped and dragged away by a few SLA soldiers who noticed that she was the only one on the road, on Paal Pannai Road between Kondavil and Thirunelveli junctions in Jaffna. Upon hearing the girl’s screams, one man came to her aid. As the man saw the SLA soldiers dragging the girl away he was attacked by them with the butt of their guns and the SLA threatened to shoot him. The man ran away and told villagers of the incident. Villagers gathered around area to look for girl and searched in the surrounding bushes.

SLMM was informed of the incident and arrived at the scene. The district judge Mrs Nanthasekaran was also informed and she ordered the Kopay police to take action to find the missing girl. The villagers continued their search for the girl behind the bushes, leading toward an SLA camp. SLMM and a representative of the Jaffna branch of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission also took part in the search. As the public approached the nearby military camp as they searched, the SLA soldiers opened fire at the people. The people ran, some fell in the rushing crowd and got slightly injured. This happened in the presence of SLMM. Villagers said they witnessed the SLA removing the bicycle that the girl was riding.

As the group search continued, it became dark, and villagers returned home. So far no further information was received.
