
Activities of GoSL operated forces 17 and 18 August
KilledBody of teacher R Sureshkumar (33) was recovered from Irupalai, Jaffna, on 17 August and handed to the Jaffna teaching hospital.
Manium Nallaih (48), a cook, was shot and killed by GoSL operated forces on 17 August at 11.00 pm as he slept in the video shop attached to his home in Batticaloa. Jaffna University swamped by SLA On 18 August at 9.00 am, Sri Lanka military entered the Jaffna University Complex in tanks and heavy vehicles in the thousands and broke open shut doors purportedly to search. Because it was during a curfew period none of the staff were present in the University complex while the military went amok. The military stole several computers in the University complex and also arrested one of the student leaders, T Bageerathan. Three days ago the military shot and killed two student leaders near the same University. ICRC vehicles come under SLA shelling near Allaipiddy A convey of ICR vehicles that was moving to wards Allaipiddy to provide humanitarian assistance to the people stranded there came under SLA shelling. The ICR was forced abandon the humanitarian operation. Unknown number of people is trapped inside Allaipiddy after clashes between SLA and the LTTE. Jaffna Judge Nandesekaran recovered four bodies a few days but had to leave another 11 due to lack of space in her vehicle. She saw many wounded who were not receiving any treatment. The ICR convoy was intended help these people. Rising number of disappeared The number of people disappearing in Jaffna has increased to alarming levels after the clashes between SLA and the LTTE. Eight out of a group of 14 pilgrims on their way to Kadirgamam, a Hindu temple at the southern most part of the island, are reported missing. Five people are reported missing from the Allaipiddy PhilipNeri church after the clashes in Allaipiddy. Two more people are reported missing in Chavakachcheri after they left to visit a relative’s house. These disappearances have been reported to the human rights commission branch in Jaffna. It is feared that many more have gone missing and the extended curfew hours and fear is preventing these disappearances being reported.
