61 school girls massacred by Sri Lankan air force Yesterday, 14 August at about 7.00 am 61 schools girls were killed and more than 155 were injured by the horrific and malicious air strike of the Government of Sri Lanka’s air force. The attack took place when 500 Advanced Level (A/L) school girls were participating in a seminar that teaches community skills development and leadership skills at the premises of Senchcholai, a girls’ home, in Vallipunam, Mullaitivu. The Government of Sri Lanka’s air force committed this brutal massacre by launching air strikes with four kfir fighter jets that dropped 16 bombs on the premises of Senchcholai. The school girls injured in this bomb attack were admitted to Mullaitivu, Puthukuddiyiruppu, Tharumapuram, Kilinochchi general hospitals and private hospitals for emergency treatment. The doctors of these hospitals are working tirelessly to ensure that the girls survive. The parents of the school girls are frantically searching for their daughters in the hospitals and at the massacre site in Senchcholai premises. UNICEF Kilinochchi Head Ms Penny Brune and SLMM Kilinochchi monitor Matti Vanionpaa inspected the massacre site and visited the hospitals where the injured girls were being treated. The 500 school girls were participating in a student seminar that teaches community leadership skills, which include courses on first aid, gender equality, self-confidence building, time management and teamwork. The girls came from five schools under Kilinochchi Education Zone, ten schools under Mullaitivu Education Zone and three schools under Thunnukai Education Zone. There are no words strong enough to condemn the Government of Sri Lanka’s pre-meditated massacre of innocent school girls in a peaceful learning environment for children. Throughout history the Government of Sri Lanka has carried out massacres and taken various oppressive actions against Tamil students. In the succession of Tamil student killings, which include Nagarkovil School massacre, the rape and murder of Krishanthi and the execution of five Tamil students in Trincomalee Port, this is the most brutal and large-scale pre-meditated massacre committed by the Government of Sri Lanka in a single attack. We mark this day, the 15th of August, as a Day of Mourning of the Vallipunam school girls massacre. We ask the people of Tamil Eelam and all Tamils living throughout the world to observe this Day of Mourning wholeheartedly. We urge the international community and organisations working for the welfare of children, such as UNICEF and Save-the-Children, to condemn this brutal act by the Government of Sri Lanka and take immediate action against those responsible for this vicious massacre, so justice can prevail.
