LTTE Political Head meets UNHCR Sri Lanka Head

LTTE Political Head, S P Tamilselvan, met with UNHCR Sri Lanka Head, Amin Awad, in Kilinochchi today to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Vakarai in the east and in Jaffna in the north.

High on the list of topics discussed is the situation in Vaharai where refugees are running from place to place to avoid Sri Lankan military shelling. Tamilselvan explained to the UNHCR Head that shortage of food and medicine in Vaharai remains acute. Tamilselvan promised LTTE’s full cooperation to the UNHCR for its humanitarian work and requested the UNHCR to urgently address the humanitarian situation of the people in Vaharai.

The suffering of the people in Jaffna due to the closure of the A9 highway was also discussed in detail. Loss of livelihood due to lack of fuel, fertilizer and other material, as well as due to severe restrictions on when and where people can go was explained to the UNHCR head. Shortage basic food and medicines and the sky rocketing prices making it out of reach for most people was described to the UNHCR head. The situation is compounded by the loss of livelihood faced by many people. Again, Tamilselvan promised full cooperation with UNHCR for its humanitarian work in Jaffna.

With the UNHCR Head, Karen Gulick, UN Human Rights Advisor for Sri Lanka, and Chris Tossel among others attended the discussions.

With Tamilselvan, P Thiyagaraja, Liaison Office for UN and International Agencies, and R Ilanthirayan, LTTE Defense Spokesperson took part in the discussion.
