Fishermen thrown into sea at Ponekari and Sampilthurai
On Friday morning Rasenthiram Nithyakulam and his two brothers were out fishing in the area where they normally fish. SL Navy in fast Dora boats arrived and surrounded their fishing boat. SL Navy demanded that they need to check the fishing boat. They then stepped into the fishing boat and pulled out everything inside the boat. They then picked up the two brothers of Nithyakulan and threw them into the sea. The SL Navy then threatened the fishermen not to fish in that area saying that it belonged to the Navy. The Navy then speeded away ripping the net that was spread by Nithyakulam.
In another very similar incident in the Sampilthurau sea area, the Navy in fast Dora boats crashed into the fishing boat belonging to Peter Amalathas and badly damaged the fishing boat. Peter Amalathas’s son Vimaraj was in the fishing boat with his father. The SL Navy picked Vimalaraj and threw him into the sea. On returning to the shore Amalathas went to the Ponnalai SL Navy camp to lodge a complaint. He was told by the Navy men at the camp that they have no authority to take complaints and they only issue passes to fishermen. It must be noted that SL Navy imposed ban on fishing in the Mathahal area and thus these fishermen were fishing in the Sampilthurai area three Kilometers away from Mathahal
